The Coastguard
Congratulations on finding an Uncertain Tides Sculpture! This is 1 of 4 sculptures dotted along the coast from Exmouth-Paignton.
It was inspired by the work of Year 7 students at Orchard Manor School, Dawlish. Students took part in a beach clean, learnt about local coastal erosion & discovered local marine wildlife. From this they created a junk-modelled diorama of the coastline, designed their own futuristic sea defences and created their own drama performances.

About The Project
Uncertain Tides was a 2 year project from 2023-25 connecting diverse young people across Devon with their local coastline. We worked in Primary & SEN schools, libraries, heritage spaces, theatres & the great outdoors to explore what the coast means to young people today, the challenges it faces and how we might protect it in the future
Thanks To…
The National Lottery Players and The National Lottery Heritage Fund for funding the sculptures.
Brendan Rawlings for sculpture design & creation.
Scott Williams from Dawlish Town Council for helping us put the sculpture here.
Shores of South Devon & Dawlish Against Plastic for volunteering their time on our beach cleans.
The staff and students from Orchard Manor School for all their hard work and creativity!
