Sculptor Call Out
FEE: £3000 plus £3000 resource budget + travel
A commission of £6000 is available for one artist to co-create 4 publicly accessible sculptures alongside young people. The sculptures will be created and installed along the coast from Exmouth-Paignton. This is part of a project run by PaddleBoat Theatre Company, looking at young people’s connection to their local coastline. The project aims to grow young people’s knowledge & passion for their local area; appreciating it now and learning how we can protect it for the future. PaddleBoat will be working in 8 schools across the region, including SEN & deaf schools, alongside libraries & environmental partners. The whole project spans from Winter 2023-Spring 2025.
The sculptures are an artistic response to the natural heritage, created with young people - this could be celebrating its beauty, sharing the voices of the young people, or highlighting the climate emergency. Ideally the sculptures have a positive impact on the natural environment around them - this could be through incorporating bug holes or spaces for marine life to create habitats. The sculptor should consider how they can ensure the sculpture’s materials are sourced sustainably, whilst optimising the sculpture’s lifespan. Each sculpture will have brief information about the project, funding acknowledgement & a QR code linking to a digital platform which shares more of the young people’s creative work. The digital platform will be created by a separate digital artist.
The timeline for the commission will be March-December 2024.
As part of the £3000 fee, the sculptor needs to;
-Attend 8 workshops at schools across the area to gather design ideas & heritage information/views from young people. We will work with the artist to timetable these in.
-Liaise with PaddleBoat throughout the process, ensuring the sculptures match the brief & the end locations of the sculptures have been agreed by land owners/authorities.
-Have workshop space to create each sculpture
-Deliver the sculptures to each location & lead on installation of each sculpture.
-Sculptures to be installed by the end of 2024.
-The illustrator must hold a current DBS or obtain one in time for the beginning of this commission.
-Budget to the £3000 resource allowance, alerting PaddleBoat to any problems as soon as they arise.
